I already play the piano, and read music. My need was something I could grab really quick or already had with me (laptop) to pick out a tune when I couldn’t quite hear it in my head. Sometimes I’m picking out church music or something and I just can’t access a piano to check a melody or the sing-ability of a particular version of something. Or something that seems completely unfamiliar to me.

I used to use my tiny old MIDI machine, especially at auditions, but I might not have it with me, or don’t want to carry another piece of equipment around “just in case”. Note to those auditioning with it, when you’re asked to look something over then sing it, this may sound selfish, but use EARPHONES. For you, you’ll be able to hear it, and you won’t have to end up playing everyone elses sample for them because they weren’t prepared, and for them, you won’t be bothering others who are trying to go over a different tune.
